Celebrated Nigerian artiste Wizkid released his sixth studio album, Morayo on November 22.
It has been described as one of the most highly anticipated projects of the year, and features a list of 16 songs.
OkayAfrica notes that it is a longer album than his previous ones, and also one with less collaborations.
“For the majority of the songs he goes the solo route, an indication that after all these years Wizkid still has a lot to say.”
The report adds: “Morayo is coming at a crucial time in Afrobeats history, where debates about its origins and destination are rife. By virtue of Wizkid’s legend, the album asks to be considered in lieu of this conversation, even as it shines with its own immediate qualities.”
Morayo translates to “I see joy” in Yoruba, and the project is dedicated to the life and legacy of his late mother Juliana Morayo Balogun, who passed away in 2023.
One of the album’s tracks is Piece Of My Heart, featuring Brent Faiyaz, which has been massively successful, as reported by Billboard.
“ ‘Piece of My Heart’ reached No. 4 on U.S. Afrobeats Songs and No. 7 on World Digital Song Sales.”
Apple Music describes Wizkid’s evolution through the years as one that demonstrates his maturity.
“On [the album], he reaffirms his link to Lagos and the communes across the city that shaped his worldview, making it a compelling listen that demands rapt attention. From track to track, the mood shifts between delirious celebration to contemplative reflection and unmistakable escapism.”
His work on the project has been called “him doing what works for him” and “being the most inspired he’s been in a long time.”
