A new TV series, Mo-Faya, created and directed by Reuben Odanga, is set to premiere on Netflix December 20.

The seven-part series, described as a drama with a touch of telenovela, unfolds predominantly in Nairobi, with glimpses of Western Kenya rarely seen on our screens.

“Mo-Faya follows Zawadie, who, after discovering shocking truths about her family, sets out to build a new life with her boyfriend, Brian—unaware that his dangerous double life will pull her into a world of secrets and crime,” film, TV and theatre platform Sinema Focus notes in a statement to Habari Digital.

The statement adds: “The series features a predominantly young cast of Lorna Lemi (Nairobby), Brahim Ouma (Pepeta), and newcomers Tobit Tom and Mathew Ngugi. The supporting cast includes Alex Mwakideu (Nafsi), Blessing Lung’aho (Country Queen), Basil Mungai (Kina), Tessy Njine (Selina) and media personality Cate Rira.”

The celebrated director Reuben Odanga is known for projects like Nafsi (2021), Selina-Telenovela (2018) and A Familiar Christmas (2022).

The Multan-Production CEO is described by Nation as among the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to make the Kenyan film industry great, profitable and conducive for everyone in the space.

“It is the production of Selina which ran for four seasons from 2017 to 2022 that put Reuben on the pedestal of Kenyan Telenovelas and in the process benefited many people working with him.”

Nation adds: “Selina remains Reuben’s best-selling production. With the hype that came with it, the quality of production and the ratings, everybody made enough to be happy about.”

Mo-Faya marks his first series on Netflix, following the premiere of his debut feature film, Nafsi, on the global streaming platform in 2022.

“Mo-Faya is raw and grounded in realism, reflecting who we are beyond the filters of social media. The show underscores the importance of present and responsible parenting as the cornerstone for raising wholesome individuals who shape the future citizenry,” Odanga says.
