The legendary American rapper, singer and songwriter Lauryn Hill will headline the upcoming Walter Town concert on September 29.
East African Breweries PLC (EABL), through its Johnnie Walker brand, announced the news in a Tuesday morning statement following much speculation and anticipation online.
“This appearance will be Ms. Hill’s first major performance in Kenya since 2019 when she headlined a concert in Kenya as part of her world tour of her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” the statement reads in part, adding that Kenya’s very own HipHop sensation Nyashinski will headline alongside the American star.
The two-day event is set to take place at the Laureate Gardens, Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, and promises an unforgettable celebration of Johnnie Walker’s heritage and cultural experience.
Josephine Katambo, Marketing Manager for Scotch & Reserve Portfolio at EABL, said: “We are incredibly excited to host Ms. Lauryn Hill’s return to Kenya, especially at such a prestigious event as Walker Town. Her legendary status in music aligns perfectly with Johnnie Walker’s values of boldness, progressiveness, and excellence.
She added: “This first ever two-day celebration will not only bring together iconic performances but also offer a rich cultural experience through art and fashion for both music and whisky enthusiasts.”
The statement reports on Ms Lauryn Hill’s iconic status, from her days with the Fugees to her growth into a solo powerhouse with 8 Grammy Awards under her belt.
“Ms. Lauryn Hill, celebrated for her pivotal role as a pioneering member of The Fugees, is globally recognised for her trailblazing contributions to hip-hop, R&B, and soul. The Fugees’ ground-breaking 1996 album, The Score, redefined hip-hop, while Ms. Hill’s solo masterpiece The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill cemented her legacy as one of the most influential and enduring artists of her generation.”
