The celebrated American rapper, singer and songwriter Lauryn Hill has officially confirmed that she will be coming to Kenya for her September 29 concert.
She took to her Instagram account to share a poster for the highly anticipated Walker Town concert, alongside a heartwarming caption.
“Mambo Nairobi! It’s official, we’re coming to Kenya!” She wrote.
“Fun fact: The first time I visited Nairobi- I was pregnant with my first born son, Zion! I’m excited to return and share my music with the incredible people of Kenya…Nawapenda. Bless.”
Throughout her career, the 8-time Grammy Award winner has created music that continues to permeate culture, as reported by Rolling Stone.
“Like the single “Ex-Factor,” which has been sampled or interpolated on major hits by Drake and Cardi B. Beyond that, the album’s [The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill] impact on multiple generations of musicians is unmistakeable. Everyone from Rihanna to St. Vincent has cited Hill as having heavily influenced their own music.”
She was propelled to the top of the hip-hop and rhythm-and-blues charts by her soulful voice at the end of the 20th century, per online encyclopedia Britannica.
“Hill and high school classmate Prakazrel (“Pras”) Michel performed together under the name Tranzlator Crew and were joined shortly thereafter by Wyclef Jean,” the report notes, adding that “As a teenager, Hill also acted on the television soap opera As the World Turns and alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. With the money she earned from her acting jobs, she helped finance her group, renamed the Fugees in 1993.”
East African Breweries Ltd (EABL), through its Johnnie Walker brand, announced that Ms Lauryn Hill would be returning to the country in a Tuesday morning statement.
“This appearance will be Ms. Hill’s first major performance in Kenya since 2019 when she headlined a concert in Kenya as part of her world tour of her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
Josephine Katambo, Marketing Manager for Scotch & Reserve Portfolio at EABL said: “We are incredibly excited to host Ms. Lauryn Hill’s return to Kenya, especially at such a prestigious event as Walker Town. Her legendary status in music aligns perfectly with Johnnie Walker’s values of boldness, progressiveness, and excellence. This first ever two-day celebration will not only bring together iconic performances but also offer a rich cultural experience through art and fashion for both music and whisky enthusiasts.
