NLC kicks off inquest on alleged historical land injustices
The National Land Commission (NLC) has began conducting physical hearings for alleged historical land injustices filed by Kiboroa squatters in Trans Nzoia County.
Speaking at Kitale Museum where the hearings are being staged, Prof. James Tuitoek leading a delegation of other commissioners stressed the commitment of the body to ensure a lasting solution to past historical injustices is unlocked.
He revealed that by September 21st 2021, NLC had received over 3,742 historical land injustices claims across the country adding that 1000 of them had fulfilled admissibility criteria for investigations.
“Out of the many allegations of land injustices NLC has received, over 1000 have undergone admissibility criteria and passed the threshold for investigative hearings.
The Commission has since made efforts to ensure that the cases are investigated after which the findings will be handed over to relevant authorities for action,” he stated.
Kiboroa squatters who were evicted from Kiboroa Forest Land in 1987 led by their chairperson Isaiah Wanyonyi, lamented that previous governments had promised to allocate them land for resettlement since eviction a promise which is yet to be honored.
In a petition handed over to NLC, the squatters have asked the government to consider compensating them for the many years they have suffered besides allocating them free parcels of Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) Land for resettlement.
Other commissioners present during the opening of the five-day hearings were Tiyah Galgalo, Esther Mathenge and Hubbie Hussein.
