Nairobi will be hosting Nigerian superstar Rema at the end of this month as the Walker Town Concert returns.
The show is set for September 28 and 29 at the Laureate Gardens in Kasarani, promising a star-studded line-up.
Organisers have released posters of the highly anticipated event, detailing that Day 1 will see the headliner, Rema, Kenya’s Bien Aime Baraza and British rapper ArrDee take to the stage.
Another poster for Day 2 lists the legendary American singer and songwriter Lauryn Hill as a performer, as well as Kenya’s celebrated rapper Nyashinski, although EABL has yet to confirm the second day’s line-up.
East African Breweries (EABL), through its Johnnie Walker Brand announced the return of the event in a press statement, promising that it will feature a stellar lineup of live performances from local and international artists, art exhibitions, fashion displays and other exciting experiences.
“Walker Town events have quickly become cultural highlights across Kenya, attracting thousands of attendees in towns like Nairobi, Meru, and Nakuru, since their inception,” the statement reads in part, adding, “These events are part of Johnnie Walker’s ongoing initiative to create immersive experiences that celebrate the brand’s storied heritage and cultural significance.”
EABL Marketing Manager for Scotch & Reserve Portfolio, Josephine Katambo, said: “This year, we are excited to expand the event to two days, allowing us to offer an even more immersive experience for attendees. From live performances to curated tastings, we aim to showcase the diverse flavours of Johnnie Walker’s heritage, while creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved.”
Attendees will have the chance to explore the different flavours of Johnnie Walker through exclusive tasting experiences “designed to showcase the unique qualities of each whisky blend.”
Hours after the posters for Day 2 started making their rounds on the internet, and Kenyans can hardly believe that Ms Lauryn Hill may be coming to the country.
On X (Formerly Twitter), the singer was trending for the better part of the morning locally, with over a thousand tweets mentioning her.
“So, does Lauryn Hill know that she’s supposed to be in Nairobi on the 29th?” one X user posed.
On the other hand, Day 1’s confirmed line-up is just as exciting.
Rema has had an exponential growth in his career since 2019, making his way to international recognition through impressive hits like Calm Down, off his 2022 album Raves and Roses.
“Despite his huge achievements so far, with youth, talent, focus and flare on his side, as well as the backing of an increasingly impressive industry, it looks like Rema’s journey of world domination has only just got started,” BBC Entertainment reports.
ArrDee is a celebrated British rapper who is also making waves in the industry, having had multiple top 10 hits on the charts last year.
“One of the tracks which propelled ArrDee to the big time was Body by Tion Wayne and Russ Millions in 2021. The chart-topping tune also featured rapper Bugzy Malone, who ArrDee credits as being an inspiration.”
